Stop the Protein Madness!

The most prevalent diet trend of the last few years that I have seen in my office is a high protein diet. I see women in my office who tell me they are doing all they can to hit their protein goal but are struggling to lose weight. When we do comprehensive lab work, I usually see markers for kidney distress and high cholesterol. In addition,

many patients on a high protein diet will report constipation because while most Americans already have enough protein in their diet, fiber is invariably low and pushing an even higher protein diet generally means even less fiber. This then leads to constipation as well. In addition, the women I see are not having successful weight loss on these very high protein diets either.
Instead, I recommend a personalized approach. When I am consulting with women about their weight loss goals, I am considering their medical history, their history with prior weight loss attempts, current medications and supplements, lab values, and their lifestyle needs. When we create a personalized treatment plan together it includes all these potential changes. I may recommend changes to everything from sleep schedules to diet, lifestyle, vitamins, minerals, herbs, and even medications that can help. There is no one-size-fits-all approach that works better than an individualized plan with someone who understands how the pieces fit together.
